In a written response regarding the effect of the BRICS Summit on Indo-China relations, Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar told the lower house of parliament that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met President Xi Jinping on the fringes of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan on October 23 of this year.
Prime Minister Modi praised the commitment during the conference to fully disengage and resolve pertinent concerns that emerged in the border regions between India and China in 2020. According to Jaishankar, he emphasised the significance of appropriately managing disagreements and conflicts and preventing them from upsetting the peace and quiet in the border regions.
“Over a recent period of time,” stated Lin Jin, the spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the regular press briefing on October 22 of this year. After extensive diplomatic and military dialogue, China and India have come to agreements on matters pertaining to the border regions. China applauds the advancements and will keep collaborating with India to ensure that these resolutions are implemented effectively.
After the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs read out a statement saying, “The two leaders commended the important progress the two sides had recently made through intensive communication on resolving the relevant issues in the border areas.”
According to Jaishankar, the government has frequently updated the Parliament on significant developments in the resolution of issues and disseminated information through briefings and news releases. The important advances in the Disengagement talks with the Chinese side were reported to the Parliament by the Indian Defence Minister on September 15, 2020, and February 11, 2021. In this regard, the government also released press releases on September 15, 2020, and February 12, 2021.
Through established mechanisms such as border personnel meetings, flag meetings, working mechanism meetings for consultation & coordination on India-China border affairs, the recent India-China Corps Commander level meeting mechanism, and diplomatic channels, the government routinely brings up any transgression along the LAC with the Chinese side.
It was decided to use the appropriate discussion mechanisms at the level of the Foreign Minister and other officials to maintain and restore bilateral ties during the meeting between PM Modi and the Chinese President in Kazan on October 23 of this year.
On November 18, this year, the External Affairs Minister met with Wang Yi, his Chinese counterpart, on the margins of the G 20 Summit. It was decided that the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism and the special representatives would meet shortly.
Media interactions, data sharing on trans-border rivers, and the restart of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Pilgrimage were among the actions proposed. Direct flights between China and India were also agreed upon. Dr. S. Jaishankar was responding to a query posed by DMK party member Dayanidhi Maran.
