Garo Hills is currently experiencing one of the greatest floods in recent memory, illustrating both the harm that nature’s wrath can inflict and the weaknesses of those who stand in its way. Three children and five women are among the at least ten persons who have died as a result of the unfolding tragedy in the area.

The past two days’ intense rains have caused mudslides, landslides, and swollen rivers that have destroyed and damaged a number of wooden bridges as well as shut off road access to many of the isolated communities.

A family of seven people in South Garo Hills perished in one of the worst tragedies of the disaster when a landslip caused by Friday’s intense rains buried them. The sad incident happened in the isolated South Garo Hills district village of Hatiasia Songma.

A portion of the slope behind the family’s home collapsed on top of them while they were inside their Gasuapara Block home, preventing them from fleeing. The tonnes of dirt from the hill buried the entire house.

The nearby villagers hurried to assist but were unable to excavate through the debris and dirt. The situation was exacerbated by the landslides and flooding in other areas, which cut off communication and caused several hours to pass before the SDRF and NDRF personnel arrived. Teams from the SDRF and NDRF have been working very hard to recover the bodies.
