Chennai and 12 Other Tamil Nadu Districts Close Schools Due to Severe Rain

Due to heavy rain advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department, which predict extensive rainfall throughout the region, schools in 12 districts will stay closed today. Since Friday night, a low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal has gotten stronger and is heading west-northwest towards the coast of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, causing heavy rains in the northern and delta areas.
Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Kanchipuram, Ariyalur, and Chengalpattu are also affected by the shutdown of schools. Furthermore, Karaikal and Puducherry schools would also be closed. Karaikal and Puducherry colleges will also be closed today.
As of 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, rainfall totals were 8 cm in Karaikal, 7 cm in Adiramapattinam and Vriddhachalam, and 6 cm in several places, including Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Poonamallee, and Red Hills. Chennai’s Nungambakkam recorded 5 cm of rain. Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukkottai are among the districts where the Regional Meteorological Centre continues to issue warnings of severe to extremely heavy rains.
