The second ship of the Survey Vessel (Large) project, INS Nirdeshak, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 18 at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam under the direction of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth. The commissioning ceremony for the second of the four ships in the Survey Vessel (Large) project, which is being built at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, was held by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The ship is built to support maritime operations, facilitate navigation, and carry out hydrographic studies.

Speaking at the event, the minister stated that the Survey Vessels, which are extremely specialised ships, are essential to ocean mapping. According to him, these are advanced specialised platforms that enable more precise processing of oceanic data, more accurate data collection, and ultimately, extremely dependable charts that improve maritime operations and safety.

Additionally, according to RRM, the Survey Ships serve as a reliable instrument for maritime diplomacy. When our Survey Ships go on missions to aid a friendly nation, they represent India’s core values of lending a hand to a friend in need without expecting anything in return. Long-term trade prospects would be opened up and promoted, and our bilateral ties would be strengthened. He stated that other fleets are turning to Bharitya Nausena for hydrographic cooperation, therefore the new Survey Ships will also increase our power.

The ship, which was constructed with more than 80% native material, has sophisticated hydrographic technologies like Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Side Scan Sonars, and Multi Beam Echo Sounders. These increase survey capabilities in dangerous and restricted areas, allow for more accurate mapping for safe navigation and planning in deep-sea activities, and make it easier and safer to gather data for environmental studies and wreck identifications.

The ship will increase India’s leadership in regional cooperation, scientific research, and peacekeeping operations while also making a substantial contribution to the security and environmental well-being of the Indian Ocean Region. By encouraging the sharing of marine data with friendly foreign nations, the ship will support the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative.

The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, GRSE, L&T, SAIL, IRS, and a sizable number of MSMEs worked together to create the ship, demonstrating India’s dedication to independence in military manufacturing and marine capabilities.
