On November 20, 2024, in New Delhi, the Joint Staff of the Japan Self Defence Force (JSDF) and Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) wrapped up the 2nd India-Japan Joint Service Staff Talks (JSST). Both nations acknowledged the changing nature of contemporary conflict and pledged to support cooperation in space and cyber technologies as essential elements of their military alliances.
JSDF Joint Staff, Director General Defence Plans and Policy Department (J5) Major General Minamikawa Nobutaka, and Assistant Chief of IDS Air Vice Marshal Prashant Mohan co-chaired the meeting. Under the current bilateral defence institutions, the officials had fruitful conversations about strengthening current defence engagements and investigating new areas of collaboration. Both parties agreed that India and Japan’s collaborations are becoming increasingly crucial in tackling new security threats, defending common interests, and maintaining Indo-Pacific peace.
The JSST serves as a platform for regular, high-level operational meetings between Japan and India to advance defence cooperation. These gatherings provide a vital forum for developing strong, expert cooperation between the two countries’ military services. By promising to continue on the gains made and to meet often for additional talks, the JSST was able to successfully strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation between the two parties. This pledge is a reflection of the two countries’ long-term strategic alliance, which is founded on respect, trust, and common values.
