The 01 Training Ship (Yard 16101) held its keel-laying ceremony at M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, on January 13, 2025. In the presence of the Director (Shipbuilding), MDL, and other senior representatives from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and M/s MDL, the ceremony was presided over by IG H K Sharma, TM, Dy Director General (M&M).
On October 17, 2023, the 01 Training Ship building contract was finalized. Following their first training on land, the ship will be crucial to the training of 70 under-trainee officers, including female officers. With a 7,500 nautical mile range, the ship will have specific amenities like a chart house, cadet training bridge, and classrooms to guarantee an excellent learning environment at sea.
The ship will be 107 meters long and capable of reaching a top speed of 20 knots. Modern equipment and cutting-edge technical systems, such as AI-based predictive maintenance systems, a multifunctional drone, the Integrated Bridge System (IBS), and the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), will also be present.
In keeping with the GoI’s objective of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, M/s MDL is designing, developing, and building this ship domestically under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The initiative will greatly enhance India’s strategic autonomy and demonstrate the country’s dedication to self-reliance in defense manufacture.
This program further solidifies the ICG’s role in defending India’s maritime interests by marking a significant turning point in the organization’s continuous efforts to improve its operational skills and guarantee the best possible training for its officers.
