In response to a request for evacuation from Tamilnadu State Authorities, the Indian Coast Guard executed a valiant rescue operation. Due to bad weather, six fisherman from Thai Kal Thoni Thurai hamlet in Cuddalore went out to sea in private boats, which were damaged and eventually sank. Around two km out from the coast at Chitrapettai village, they found themselves stranded at the defunct Chemplast Jetty in Cuddalore.

Also stuck and in urgent need of evacuation were four people who were working at the jetty. The state authorities asked ICG for the rescue operations because there was no road access to the jetty and the weather was getting worse because of the continuous cyclonic activity.

The state’s request was promptly addressed by the ICG Regional Headquarters (East), and an Advanced Light Helicopter was launched from ICG Air Station Chennai right away. The ALH conducted the SAR mission with the highest professionalism in spite of the unfavourable weather, and all ten of the lives were successfully evacuated to Chithiraipettai.
