On October 29, the Indian Navy launched Sagarmala Parikrama to highlight the technological breakthroughs made possible by startup innovation. During the Plenary Session of Swavlamban 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the autonomous surface vessel “Matangi,” which was developed by Sagar Defence Engineering.
The distance covered by the sea transit from Mumbai to Tuticorin is 1500 kilometres, or 850 nautical miles. Using “navigation & collision avoidance software” that was developed locally, Matangi would travel in autonomous mode during the voyage without the need for human interaction.
The first part of the autonomous mode transit from Mumbai to Karwar, which is roughly 600 km (350 nm) long, was successfully finished by Matangi at night. There are still 1000 kilometres to Tuticorin.
The successful creation and certification of specialised technology that embodies the spirit of Swavlamban 2024 is led by startups and MSMEs. Making science, technology, and innovation a game-changer in the nation is the goal of “Strength and power through innovation & indigenisation.”
