On November 5, the first and second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) (ex-GRSE), Yards 3037 and 3038, had their keel laying ceremony at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. in Kolkata. Senior representatives from the Indian Navy and M/s GRSE attended the ceremony, which was presided over by West Bengal Governor Dr. CV Ananda Bose.
On March 23, the MoD and M/s GSL, Goa, for seven ships, and M/s GRSE, Kolkata, for four ships, signed contracts for the indigenous design and building of eleven NGOPVs. With a tonnage of about 3000T, the NGOPVs are intended for use in anti-piracy activities, search and rescue missions, coastal defence and surveillance, and the protection of offshore assets.
The vessels’ keel laying marks yet another important turning point in the Indian Navy’s efforts to build ships domestically in line with the country’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” visions.
