Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence, paid a visit to the Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) facility in Kanpur today, which is known as the Field Gun Factory. It focusses in producing barrel and breach assemblies for a range of tanks and artillery guns, such as the Dhanush Gun and Tank T-90.

In order to assess vital domestic defence capabilities, the Defence Minister visited several important facilities, such as the factory’s New Assembly Shop and Heat Treatment. Secretary of Defence Production Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defence R&D, and Chairman of DRDO Dr. Samir V. Kamat were with him.

The CMDs of three Kanpur-based Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs)—AWEIL, Troop Comforts India Limited, and Gliders India Limited—as well as the Director of Defence Materials and Stores Research & Development Establishment, a DRDO laboratory, briefed Rajnath Singh after the shop floor visit.

In order to address the needs of the Services, the CMDs of the new DPSUs updated the Defence Minister during the presentations on their product profiles, significant ongoing projects, research and development, and modernisation initiatives.

AWEIL specialises in producing gun systems in small, medium, and large calibres. Combat uniforms, ballistic protective gear, extreme cold clothing, and high-altitude tents are TCL’s primary goods. On the other hand, GIL is India’s oldest and largest parachutist producing facility.
