Phantom, an Indian Army Belgian Malinois sniffer dog, gave his life in the pursuit of terrorists on October 28 during a ferocious counter-terror operation in the Battal region of Jammu. Since his induction into this field in August 2022, Phantom—who was born in May 2020—has played a crucial role in several high-stakes missions. Phantom died from wounds sustained during this operation while assisting troops during a crucial stage of the chase.
When militants unexpectedly ambushed an army convoy in the deep jungles of Battal early in the morning, the operation came to fruition. As part of a larger plan by Pakistan-sponsored tanzeems to challenge the Army’s hegemony in the higher parts of the Pir Panjal ranges and the hinterland, the terrorists sought to disturb the peace during the Diwali season. Desperate attempts to cause disorder have resulted from terrorists shifting activities closer to the Line of Control (LoC) due to increased troop density and a robust counter-infiltration grid along the LoC.
Troops reacted quickly and pushed the militants back into the thick forest. The cordon was strengthened by the deployment of reinforcements, including special forces and a nearby mechanised column used for training. A highly skilled sniffer dog named Phantom was instrumental in locating the terrorists’ route through the difficult jungle landscape. Phantom helped troops tighten the cordon by seeing possible escape routes and hidden bombs as the operation went on.
Unfortunately, while trying to defend the troops from a terrorist attack, Phantom was fatally wounded in a close confrontation. His deeds were crucial in guaranteeing the terrorists’ containment, highlighting the valour, devotion, and essential roles of the Army’s canine soldiers. Phantom’s sacrifice serves as a sobering reminder of the tremendous price paid for pursuing peace and national security.
Senior officials praised the troops’ prompt and well-coordinated response while honouring Phantom’s ultimate sacrifice. “Phantom’s courage was essential to the operation’s success and saved lives. “His sacrifice will be honoredly remembered,” the Defence PRO declared.
The operation effectively eliminated the terror threat, preventing any escape and guaranteeing that no troops were killed. It was aided by cutting-edge technology like as drones, ordnance-dropping devices, and night monitoring equipment. Despite efforts to interfere with the Diwali festivities, the mission reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to upholding peace and harmony.
Phantom’s tale serves as a potent metaphor for the Indian Army’s and its K9 unit’s steadfast resolve. His sacrifice serves as a reminder of the unsung but vital roles that canine heroes play in ensuring the safety of the country. The foiled ambush, which was motivated by the desperation of the terrorists, is evidence of the security forces’ and the people of Jammu’s tenacity in maintaining peace in the face of repeated attempts to disturb it.
