On October 25, M/s L&T, Kattupalli hosted the launch of “Abhay,” the seventh Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) being constructed by M/s GRSE for the Indian Navy. VAdm Rajesh Pendharkar, FOC-in-C (East), presided over the Launch Ceremony. The ship was launched by Mrs. Sandhya Pendharkar, President NWWA, Eastern Region, in accordance with nautical custom.
On April 19, the MoD and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, inked a contract for the construction of eight ASW SWC ships. The Indian Navy’s current fleet of Abhay class ASW Corvettes will be replaced by Arnala class vessels, which are intended for minelaying operations, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and anti-submarine operations in coastal seas. The ASW SWC ships have a maximum speed of 25 knots and an endurance of 1800 NM. They are roughly 77 meters long.
The nation’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in shipbuilding is demonstrated by the launch of Abhay. Because the ASW SWC ships are built with more than 80% indigenous material, Indian manufacturing facilities will be able to carry out large-scale defence production, creating jobs and enhancing the nation’s capabilities.
