Large cardamom prices are rising as the demand for spices rises worldwide. In Nepal, large cardamom is currently sold for NPR 2500 per kilogramme. In Eastern Nepal, it is a highly valuable cash crop. With 68% of the world’s production, Nepal is the biggest producer of huge cardamom, followed by India and Bhutan. Masala tea, non-vegetarian treats, and South Asian cuisine all make considerable use of large cardamom. With India being the biggest importer and newer markets opening up in the Middle East, Bangladesh, Europe, and the US, Nepal exports the majority of its huge cardamom.

Along with Dhading, Lamjung, and Kaski, the eastern hilly districts—in particular, Ilam, Taplejung, Panchthar, Sankhuwasabha, and Terhathum—are the primary locations for extensive cardamom growing. At elevations between 800 and 2,200 meters, these areas enjoy the advantages of a cool, humid environment and well-drained soils.

Large cardamom production in Nepal has decreased over the last two years as a result of climate-related diseases including wilt and stem borer infestation. Despite this, Nepali huge cardamom is highly sought-after by consumers because to its distinct smokey flavour, which results from the pods being traditionally dried over wood fires.
