High Commission of India in Colombo, observed Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and Lachit Divas

In memory of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and Lachit Borphukan, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, the cultural branch of the Indian High Commission in Colombo, celebrated Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and Lachit Divas.

In honour of tribal chieftain Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s struggle against British colonial control, Janjatiya Gaurav Divas celebrated his 150th birthday. Chair Professor Upul Ranjith Hewawitanagamage emphasised the representation of Birsa Munda in Indian literature, while Senior Professor K. Karunarathilaka of the University of Kelaniya gave a talk on the contributions of the tribal groups.

During the celebration of Lachit Divas, tributes were also given to Lachit Borphukan, the Ahom commander. In the Battle of Saraighat, the Ahom leader had guided the Ahom kingdom to victory over the Mughal Empire.

Prof. Ankuran Dutta, the Center’s director, underlined the importance of both national heroes’ achievements.
